Description

Tennessee Onion Dip is a rich, creamy appetizer featuring caramelized sweet onions combined with mayonnaise, cream cheese, garlic, and herbs, topped with a blend of cheddar and smoked gouda cheeses and baked to bubbly perfection. Perfect for serving with crackers, crostini, or bread at any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale

Onion Base

  • 2 large chopped sweet onions
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Dip Mixture

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 4 ounces softened cream cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded smoked gouda cheese

Garnish

  • Chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the dip.
  2. Cook the onions: In a large oven-safe skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the chopped sweet onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and tender, which should take about 15 minutes.
  3. Mix the dip: Remove the skillet from the heat. Add 1 cup mayonnaise, 4 ounces of softened cream cheese, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon dried thyme, ½ teaspoon salt, 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, and 1 cup shredded smoked gouda cheese to the cooked onions. Stir everything together until well combined.
  4. Bake the dip: Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake the mixture for 25 minutes or until the dip is bubbly and the cheese has melted fully.
  5. Garnish and serve: Remove the dip from the oven and garnish with chopped parsley. Serve warm with crackers, crostini, or slices of bread.

Notes

  • Storing Leftovers: Keep any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. This dip does not freeze well.
  • To Reheat: Warm leftovers in the microwave or oven on low heat until the cheese is melted again.
  • Use Vidalia or other sweet onions for the best flavor.
  • Use an oven-safe skillet to avoid transferring the dip before baking.
  • For a smokier flavor, substitute smoked gouda with smoked cheddar if desired.
