Ingredients
Scale
Base Ingredients
- 3 cups whole milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
Flavorings & Mix-ins
- 1 3.4 ounce box butterscotch instant pudding
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp ginger paste
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
Carbonation
- 1 2-liter cream soda
Optional Toppings
- Whipped cream or coconut whipped cream
- Butterscotch sauce or caramel sauce
Instructions
- Combine Base Ingredients: In a large microwavable bowl, combine 3 cups whole milk, 1/4 cup unsalted butter at room temperature, and 1/4 cup packed brown sugar. Whisk together until well blended.
- Heat Mixture: Microwave the mixture for 3 minutes. Whisk again until the butter is melted and the sugar is fully dissolved.
- Add Cream Soda and Pudding Mix: Whisk in half of the 2-liter bottle of cream soda. Then add the entire 3.4 ounce box of butterscotch instant pudding and stir thoroughly to combine.
- Incorporate Flavorings: Add 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon ginger paste, and 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper. Whisk well until the spices and vanilla are evenly distributed.
- Add Remaining Cream Soda: Pour in the rest of the cream soda bottle and stir carefully to mix without losing too much carbonation.
- Warm and Maintain Temperature: Heat the butterbeer gently either in the microwave, on the stovetop over low heat, or transfer to a crockpot set initially on high and then lowered to keep warm. Stir occasionally to prevent settling.
- Serve with Optional Toppings: Ladle the hot butterbeer into cups and top with whipped cream or coconut whipped cream. Drizzle butterscotch or caramel sauce over the whipped cream if desired for an extra indulgent touch.
Notes
- If the butterbeer is too thick, stir in an additional 1 cup of whole milk to thin to desired consistency.
- The ginger and cayenne provide a gentle warmth; adjust to 1/2 teaspoon each for a spicier kick.
- Sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg on top for extra cozy spice flavor.
- Pair with Harry Potter-themed treats like Chocolate Frogs or Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans for a themed party.
- Store leftover butterbeer in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.
- Reheat gently on the stovetop over low heat, stirring occasionally to maintain texture.
- Freezing is not recommended due to carbonation and dairy; texture may suffer upon thawing.
- You can prepare the base (milk, butter, sugar, pudding mix, vanilla, ginger, and cayenne) a day ahead and refrigerate, then add cream soda just before serving to maintain fizz.
