Main Ingredients
- 4 cups fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into bite-size pieces
- 10.5 oz. can cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 2/3 cups crispy fried onion strings, divided
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly coat a 3-quart casserole dish with non-stick spray for easy cleanup.
- Cook Green Beans: Bring a pot of lightly salted water to a boil, add the trimmed green beans, and cook until fork-tender, about 10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- Mix Sauce: In the prepared casserole dish, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper until smooth.
- Combine Ingredients: Add the cooked green beans, 2/3 cup of the crispy fried onion strings, and all of the shredded cheddar cheese to the sauce. Stir well to coat the green beans evenly.
- Bake Casserole: Place the casserole dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the center is bubbly and hot.
- Add Topping: Remove the casserole from the oven, sprinkle the remaining crispy fried onion strings on top, and return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes to crisp the onions.
- Serve: Remove from oven and serve the casserole immediately while hot and bubbly for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, ensure the cream of mushroom soup and Worcestershire sauce are vegetarian-friendly or substitute accordingly.
- You can prepare this casserole a day ahead; assemble it and refrigerate before baking to save time on serving day.
- If fresh green beans are unavailable, frozen green beans can be used—thaw and drain before cooking.
- To add extra flavor, consider mixing in minced garlic or a splash of soy sauce in the soup mixture.
- Use a sharp cheddar cheese to get a nice tang that balances the creaminess of the soup.
- If you prefer a creamier casserole, add a bit more milk to the soup mixture.
