Description

These soft and flavorful Garlic Knots are the perfect homemade bread treat, brushed with a fragrant garlic butter and topped with Parmesan and flaky sea salt. Ideal as a side dish or appetizer, they're easy to make with a stand mixer and bake to golden perfection in just 15 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Garlic Knots:

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon active-dry yeast
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • toppings: freshly-grated Parmesan cheese, flaky sea salt

Garlic Butter:

  • 4 tablespoons salted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon finely-chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Heat the liquids: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine water and melted butter, then add milk and honey and stir until mixed. Microwave for 1 minute, stir, and continue microwaving in 15 second intervals until the mixture reaches 110°F, warm but not hot.
  2. Add yeast: Pour the liquid mixture into a stand mixer bowl. Sprinkle yeast evenly on top, stir lightly with a fork, and let it rest for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. Add dry ingredients: Add 3 1/2 cups flour, salt, and garlic powder. Mix on medium-low with dough hook until combined. If dough sticks to bowl, add up to 1/2 cup more flour gradually until dough pulls away and is slightly sticky. Mix on low speed for 4-5 minutes until smooth. Shape dough into a ball and place in a greased bowl.
  4. Let the dough rise: Cover bowl with damp towel and let dough rise for 15 minutes.
  5. Prep oven and baking sheet: Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Form garlic knots: Shape dough into a 16-inch log. Slice into 15-16 equal pieces. Roll each into an 8-inch rope, tie into a knot, and arrange on baking sheet. Cover loosely with kitchen towel and let rise for 15 minutes.
  7. Bake: Remove towel and bake knots for 15 minutes until lightly golden and cooked through. Meanwhile, whisk garlic butter ingredients together.
  8. Brush with garlic butter: Transfer baking sheet to a wire rack. Immediately brush knots with garlic butter, then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and flaky sea salt.
  9. Serve: Serve warm and enjoy your homemade garlic knots.

Notes

  • Ensure liquid is warm, not hot, to properly activate yeast without killing it.
  • If you don’t have a stand mixer, knead dough by hand for about 8-10 minutes until smooth.
  • Fresh parsley can be substituted with dried parsley if needed; use about 1 teaspoon dried.
  • For a dairy-free option, substitute butter and milk with plant-based alternatives.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days; reheat in oven before serving.
