Description

This easy fried cabbage recipe is a flavorful and comforting side dish featuring crispy bacon, sautéed onions, garlic, and a hint of smoky paprika, enhanced with stone ground mustard for a tangy kick. Perfectly caramelized cabbage is tossed with savory bacon bits to create a delicious accompaniment for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 6 pieces bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons stone ground mustard (or Dijon mustard)
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 head cabbage, sliced and chopped
  • kosher salt, to taste
  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook Bacon: Heat a large pan over medium heat and add the sliced bacon. Cook it until crispy, then transfer the bacon pieces to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess grease. Leave about 2 tablespoons of bacon grease in the pan for flavor.
  2. Sauté Onion: Add the diced onion to the pan with the bacon grease. Sauté for 2 to 3 minutes until the onions become translucent and fragrant.
  3. Add Garlic and Spices: Stir in the minced garlic, stone ground mustard, smoked paprika, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Mix well to combine all the flavors.
  4. Cook Cabbage: Place the sliced and chopped cabbage into the pan on top of the onion and spice mixture. Use a large spoon or tongs to stir and sauté everything together for 12 to 15 minutes. Cook until the cabbage is buttery soft and slightly caramelized, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking.
  5. Combine Bacon: Finally, toss the crispy bacon pieces back into the pan and stir everything together. Heat through briefly before serving hot.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, omit bacon and use olive oil instead of bacon grease.
  • Adjust seasoning with additional salt or pepper according to taste.
  • Stone ground mustard adds texture, but Dijon mustard can be used for a smoother flavor.
  • For extra smoky flavor, consider adding a pinch more smoked paprika.
  • Leftover fried cabbage can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
