Description

Crispy and cheesy homemade air fryer tater tots made from shredded russet potatoes mixed with sharp cheddar cheese and baked to perfection in an air fryer for a delicious appetizer or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 4 medium russet potatoes, washed

Cheese Mixture

  • 1½ cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Boil Potatoes: Place the potatoes in a pot of cold salted water, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes until a fork can pierce them but they remain firm. Drain and allow to cool for about 15 minutes until cool to the touch.
  2. Grate Potatoes: Once cooled, grate the potatoes using a grater and transfer them to a large mixing bowl.
  3. Mix Ingredients: Add the grated sharp cheddar cheese, all-purpose flour, kosher salt, and black pepper to the grated potatoes. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined.
  4. Shape Tater Tots: Lay out a large sheet of parchment paper. Scoop 1 tablespoon portions of the mixture and shape each into a cylindrical tater tot. Place each formed tot onto the parchment paper. Repeat until all mixture is used.
  5. Preheat Air Fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 380°F and lightly spray the basket with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  6. Air Fry Tots: Place the tater tots in a single layer in the air fryer basket without overcrowding. Spray the tops lightly with oil. Cook for 10 minutes.
  7. Flip and Finish Cooking: After 10 minutes, carefully flip each tater tot, spray with oil again, and cook for an additional 5 minutes until golden and crispy.
  8. Serve: Remove the tater tots from the air fryer and serve immediately while hot and crispy.

Notes

  • Make sure the potatoes are cooled completely before grating to prevent mushiness.
  • You can substitute all-purpose flour with gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version.
  • Use sharp cheddar cheese for best flavor and melting properties.
  • Adjust salt and pepper according to your taste preferences.
  • Work in batches when air frying to avoid overcrowding and ensure crispiness.
  • Use cooking spray or a light drizzle of oil to enhance browning and prevent sticking.
